Great Retirement Communities

Posted by admin | July 2, 2008 .

You very likely have not even thought of having aeroacrophobia – fear of open high places or batrachophobia – fear of amphibians, such as frogs, newts, salamanders, etc or spheksophobia – fear of wasps or demonophobia – fear of demons, but you probably are afraid of something. One thing that most of us don’t even like to think of at one time or another is getting old. Aging comes with many changes…

However, one thing that will help you deal with aging is finding the right place to retire. With that in mind, I have put together a few places that you should take a look at. These range from the famous to the totally unknown. But, each has unique features that might just make you go ah!

Fair Hope (Fairhope), Alabama

This is one of the more expensive retirement spots in Alabama, but is a beautiful spot with spanish moss hanging from the trees, many paintings and flowers. Many have called it Carmel-by-the-Bay – refering to California’s famous spot.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Need a break on your corporate taxes? Look no further than Sioux Falls, South Dakota where there is no corporate income tax. Plus, there is a fairly low cost of living, many beautiful parks and very low crime rate.

Lafayette, Louisiana

If you like Cajun, this just might be the best spot in the world for you. With the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival one of the highlights of year round Cajun-Creole music, culture and activities. There is plenty to do outdoors as well with fishing, boating and exploring the famous bayous. There is plenty of good healthcare and even some museums and golf courses to round out the picture.

Brevard, North Carolina

Although you probably won’t see any vampires here, this is in Transylvania County. This area frequently is near the top of the list of the best places to live, work, and play and best retirement communities. Brevard is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The scenery is beautiful and it has been called “The Land of Waterfalls”. You can go hiking ( with 470 miles of hiking trails in nearby Pisgah National Forest), kayaking, fishing and biking. There are great annual street festivals, cultural and musical programs.

Brunswick, Maine

This is small town New England at its best. Famous residents have included Harriet Beecher Stowe who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin while living here. The Brunswick Naval Air Station is here. There is good hiking and cycling on the Androscoggin River Bike Trail. There are plenty of museums, libraries and golf courses to keep you busy.

Edmonton, Oklahoma

Retirement in a very inexpensive place to retire to, numerous awards as a “Best” small town or place to live and one of the fastest growing communities in Oklahoma describe this great spot very well. You have your choice of living in some great mixed generation neighborhoods or active retirement communities. With its own active art culture as well as nearby Oklahoma City, it has plenty to offer.
